England v France may not instill the sort of emotive rivalry of an England/Germany game but there is plenty of history between the two teams to ensure that every international between the teams is played with plenty of passion.
England certainly had the better of the early games between the two teams with France only winning one of the internationals before 1955.
The reverse is true of the matches between the two teams in later years with England struggling as France emerged as potent force in World Football. The fact that so many French players now play in the Premier League means that many club friendships are tested when these two international teams play each other but despite Frances recent dominance the games still tend to be close.
England must now see a French team in transition after a disastrous 2010 World Cup and any games against the French in the next couple of years must give England a great chance of redressing the balance of recent games.England 3 France 1
Bryan Robson scores after twenty-seven seconds for one of the fastest World Cup goals ever and England go on to a comfortable 3-1 success over France. The downside of this victory was that England went on to top their group and qualified for the next group stage with West Germany and Spain. France somehow ended up facing Austria and Northern Ireland in their next group and qualified for the semi-finals as England went home!
France 2 England 1
The opening game of Group B in Euro 2004 saw two of the favourites for competition squaring up against each other with both teams desperate to get off to a quick start.
England did take the early initiative with Frank Lampard opening the scoring in the first half. England go in 1-0 up at half-time and after half an hour of the second half England get a chance to seal victory as they awarded a penalty. Unbelievably David Beckham misses from the spot and the whole atmosphere of the game changes. England manage to hang on till the 90th minute but then the superb Zinedine Zidane curls in a sublime free-kick to make the game all square and the two teams seemingly opening up with a point apiece. However, England start to panic and a desperate pass back is pounced on by Henry who gets fouled by the oncoming England ‘keeper David James and France have a penalty in the 93rd minute! Zidane slots home the penalty to give France all the opening points from a game that France looked certain to lose as the game hit 90 minutes.
England 2 France 0
England needed a win to ensure making it out of the opening group and into the quarter-finals but France could spoil the party with a victory. As it was England were comfortable 2-0 winners with two goals from Roger Hunt that sealed a place in the next round and that famous match with Argentina and Antonio Rattin.
